Alleged GoFundMe Fraud

GoFundMe Campaign Created for Texas Teen with Down Syndrome is a Fake, Says Family

GoFundMe funeral

It’s a story we’ve told 1000 times, and we’ll keep telling it until such time as GoFundMe decides to stop letting random strangers and distant scummy relatives put up funeral fundraisers for people who’ve died. We don’t see that happening any time soon, so add this one to the ever-growing list of GoFundMe funeral fraud pages.

14-year-old Iszah Cruz Ramirez died this week after he was hit by an 18 wheeler after he attempted to cross the busy Interstate 10 in San Antonio. His family says they aren’t sure why he was there in the first place.

As the family is working through their unimaginable loss, they’re also trying to make sense of a GoFundMe page they say was a scam.

According to local KENS5, a family friend contacted Iszah’s mother to report a GoFundMe page in Iszah’s name; the campaign organizer apparently claimed family members requested the page be set up.

Once they were aware of the phony page, family members tried to get in touch with the owner of the page, who later deleted the GoFundMe campaign along with his Facebook account.

“How dare you. My grandson did nothing to you,” the deceased boy’s grandmother told KENS5. “You have no right. Have some compassion for my daughter and my family. This is a time of pain and sorrow and he’s trying to make a profit off of that and that wasn’t right.”

It seems the family had no idea who the campaign organizer is. They’ve since opened up a campaign of their own.

We were unable to find any record of the campaign.
